Measuring Distance

Introduction

The Measuring Distance feature in Yogger enables users to manually and accurately measure distances within recorded or uploaded videos during movement analysis. This tool is especially useful for tracking performance metrics such as vertical and horizontal jump distances or stride lengths. By allowing users to capture snapshots and overlay measurements, it provides a visual representation of progress over time, making it an essential component of Yogger’s biomechanical analysis capabilities.

Location: To access this feature, open a video in Playback Mode. At the top of the screen, you'll see the Distance Measurement button — it’s the leftmost button in the row, just beside the back button.

Purpose and Functionality

The primary purpose of the feature is to offer a reliable way to quantify motion and improvement by establishing a reference scale. Users can choose between two methods to set this reference: either by entering the height of the athlete or by drawing a line over a known distance visible in the video, such as a yard marker or ruler. Once a reference is set, Yogger uses it to ensure that all subsequent measurements are scaled accurately. The app also provides flexibility in units of measurement, allowing users to toggle between metric and imperial systems to match their preference or regional standards.

How to Use

To use the tool, first access the video in Playback Mode and open the distance settings. Choose your preferred reference method: enter the athlete's height (the default is 5'10" or 177 cm), or draw a manual reference line over a known object in the frame. After setting the reference, tap the ruler icon in the drawing menu to activate the distance tool. Double-tap the screen to begin drawing a measurement line. You can drag each endpoint of the line to position it precisely where you want. If needed, measurements can be cleared using the undo function or the clear button at the top of the screen.

Tips and Best Practices

For best results, users are encouraged to:

  • Base measurements on visible known distances whenever possible.
  • Use the athlete’s height only when the athlete is fully visible and standing upright in the frame.
  • Maintain consistency in measurement units across sessions to improve comparability.
  • Capture snapshots with measurements overlaid to easily document progress.
  • Combine this feature with other Yogger tools, such as drawing and angle measurement, to assess technique and improvements in greater detail.
